A collection of finished works lined up. At a glance it looks like a single glaze, but there are countless small variations: longer or shorter dips, a touch more dryness, a little extra weight in the surface. Every piece out of the kiln is feedback for the ones still to come.

Plates are one of the trickier forms in porcelain. The flatter and cleaner the design, the more the clay wants to move, slump, or crack in the kiln. I’ve been reworking my plate ideas, trying to find a balance between restraint and stability. I tend to avoid obvious rims—I like the sense of a continuous surface—but I’m testing them as well, just to see where they might sit in the language of the work.

One season I never tire of in Japan is autumn. Kōyō brings a measured range of colour that I keep returning to in the studio—how hues sit together, how a surface can feel natural rather than forced.

This year I finally had time to take it in properly; a short trip down the river at the end of November, camera in hand, just as the leaves began to fall.

Once the bowls firm up, I turn them and trim the foot to remove mass. Too much clay there invites cracking and leaves the piece feeling clumsy. The aim is lightness without losing structure. I’ve always worked on the thin side, which means the odd mishap, but with time you learn the limits of the body.
